Hitachi showed off a prototype storage device of 2 cm square with a thickness of 2mm made from Quartz glass- a material used to make instruments for lab use. Its also resistant to different type of chemical substance, radio waves, heat for upto 1,000 degrees Celsius with maximum 2 hours of exposure. The data stays intact and undamaged, unless the quartz glass is broken.
Currently its been said that it can hold 40 megabytes per square inch. Hitachi didn’t reveal when this will be available in the market but most likely government agencies, museums and religious organisations will be the first to see.
