Intel 8 Series Rev C1 Chipset affects USB 3.0 devices

A  curious finding was spotted in an insane round-up of thirty-three Intel Haswell motherboard group test done by Hardware.info. All 26 Z87 Series Chipset motherboards are from ASROCK, Asus, Gigabyte, MSI and Intel. The issue was specifically with many USB 3.0 devices when coming out of sleep mode.

Earlier it was reported that Haswell’s 8 series motherboard would have an issue. Now that the motherboards are out, it seems that Rev C1 chipsets have a bug in its integrated USB 3.0 which affects certain USB 3.0 storage devices. Intel back then did point out that the problem is nothing more than annoying, but not a deal breaker.

The issue is that the USB 3.0 device briefly disconnects and reconnects to the system once the PC wakes up from standby mode. Hardware.Info did say that this is not a huge problem as the worse case scenario out be to open the file again. It is assured that no data will be lost due to this annoying bug. Motherboard manufacturers also say that this is not a major problem.

Nevertheless, Intel indicated that from the end of July, motherboard manufacturers will be getting C2 rev chipset for Haswell processors. While motherboard manufacturer didn’t plan if they will mark the “Rev C2” 8 series motherboards in the packaging, but as of now the only way to find out if you have C1 or C2 is by referring to CPU-Z’s mainboard tab which will show Revision 04 under Southbridge which will be C1, whereas Revision 05 will be Rev C2 Intel 8 Series Chipset.

The source tested 22 USB 3.0 flash drives, external drives and external SSDs. Out of 22, 14 USB 3.0 devices were affected by this problem.
