New HP printer firmware blocks third party cartridges, claims ‘defective’

HP’s updated firmware blocks 3rd party printer cartridges…again!

Reports over a year ago it was found that HP released firmware updates to block 3rd party cartridges from being used by its printers, resulting in a backlash and skepticism to purchase overpriced HP cartridges. Recently HP was caught having the same blocking firmware for more of its printers.

Its Officejet printer updates now enabled its ‘Dynamic Security’ function where it reports third-party ink cartridges as defection. German-based printer ink retailer 123inkt have received several of such reports from its buyers. They’ve documented about 34 Officejet/Officejet pro printers to show this behaviour.

Irrespective of the argument to be for and against this update, everybody sane enough will admit that official printer inks are notoriously expensive even at times equivalent to the cost of the printer itself.

Workaround available!

There is a workaround as they provide a firmware with its HP dynamic security disabled by default. You can download the firmware from here.

As they have mentioned, this update applies to you ONLY if all three of the following conditions are true:

  • Your printer is on the table at the top of this document. Other HP printers are not affected.
  • You are using an aftermarket supply that contains a non-HP security chip (this may be a refilled or remanufactured HP cartridge with a non-HP chip). Only cartridges that lack HP’s security chip are affected.
  • A Cartridge Problem error message displays. Other error messages are not related.

The affected printers are as follows:
