Nintendo axes online gameplay for its older consoles

Nintendo is terminating its online play functionality for Wii DS and DSi, maybe with the hopes that this move may make its fans adopt Wii U. Functions such as online play, matchmaking and leaderboards will be deactivated for the above named consoles. Wii Speak and its channel, followed by Wii U’s Wii mode will be deactivated.

The offline functionality of the consoles and games will not be affected. Nintendo also added that access to Wii Shop, DSi shop and Video on-demand services will be not axed for now. The list of games that won’t have online support can be found here.
