The green team Nvidia will be using its NVLink technology to enable 8 way-GPU setups with its upcoming ‘Pascal’ generation GPUs. Using the NVLink setup, it will allow the system to use PCI Express bandwidth for maintaining communication between the CPU and the GPU.
As of now, NVLink will be providing up to 20GB/s bandwidth throughput, and each card will support up to 80GB/s per direction. It’s not clear if it this would enable its users to take full advantage of the multi-GPU setups via NVLink bandwidth during their rendering process. While its seems unlikely that this would be found in the retail market yet, one may safely speculate that Nvidia is making a lot of effort with this proprietary bandwidth which may even replace SLI.
But as of now, IBM plans to use NVLink for its supercomputers and its servers using Nvidia Tesla Accelerators.
