The first SSD-based Cache drive that I’ve reviewed was Corsair Accelerator which used the SSD Caching software from Nvelo. At the time of writing that review, because of the Nvelo caching software, the function of SSD Cache was extremely limited, but then there was an update where they said they’ve taken care of it, but eventually Samsung acquired Nvelo.

So the case of SSD Caching is gone? Well, there’s SanDisk.

For those who don’t know, SSD Cache works when you install the SSD and its software, usually that can be installed from the SSD manufacturer’s website. Once the software is installed, the SSD does not detect itself as a drive on windows, but it works as a write and read cache for your mechanical drive. The reason for this is to get near-SSD ish boot load speed. But it should be noted that newer SSDs will roll out toggle NAND and higher IOPS/better 4K Random throughput. SSD cache simply gives a decent enough boost to your existing drives. No reinstallations, no hank-panky!

Or at the very least that’s the idea.

That’s what I didn’t like in the Nvelo’s alternative. As stated, there were issues that should have been addressed before releasing it- and having no support for RAID drives and multi-HDD cache is something that will look down on. They did release a new utility, but that was well after the review for accelerator was put up- and before got acquired by Samsung!

Hopefully SanDisk’s ReadyCache would change that perception. Although I really feel that if I tested this 6-8 months ago, roughly when Nvelo and other manufacturers were rolling out SSD cache drives, I would have been able to make a convincing point for a limited users who would benefit from such concept, especially in this time where even a decent 120gig MLC/Toggle Flash NAND based SSD costs good money.

Not that I am saying that you shouldn’t buy now if you’re interested! But in reality, you get 120gig much lesser cost than what you used to get it almost a year ago, although a good one costs a good amount of money, depending on your usage and requirements, it’s worth stretching it for many types of end-users. But what about for casual system users on a strict budget and needs something snappy?

Should you buy a new mechanical drive and SSD cache? Well, it makes a lot more sense to buy a good enough SSD now and then stick with mechanical drives as a secondary storage drive. So what I am saying is that if this is a good product, it’s a good option for those who are unwilling

SanDisk as only one storage capacity for caching under their ReadyCache lineup (at least for now)- a 32gig but a SATA III (unlike Corsair Accelerator which was SATAII) and the licensed Caching software from Condusiv Technologies, a company that provides data performance optimization solution for independent software vendors, OEMs and even home users.
